Looking Outward

I was sitting by myself
at a café today,
when I realized I look
outward now.

Toward the world.

It felt a bit strange,
because for the most part
I’d spent my years
looking inward.

Toward the self.

A threshold has been crossed,
maybe.

After all those years
looking inward,
by now I must know myself

—not completely—

but I know
a good deal of it
enough
to now be able to look outward

and really see.
